Weights and Measures
The Ministry’s Agency, the Bureau of Standards Jamaica (BSJ), has responsibility for the administration of the Weights and Measures Act. In carrying out its activities, the Bureau:
- Develops national, regional and international standards.
- Enforces technical regulations (compulsory standards) relating to health, safety, the environment, energy efficiency and basic consumer protection.
- Enforces the Weights and Measures Regulations in the context of standards applicable to international measurement capability to industry and commerce.
- Investigates consumer complaints about product quality.
- Facilitates regional and international trade via active participation in the work of standards organizations, such as the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM).
Amendment of the Weight and Measures Act is currently being pursued by the Ministry. This proposed amendment seeks to review standards-related legislation under the National Quality Infrastructure (NQI) Project.
The Commerce Division of the Ministry has responsibility for administration of the Weights and Measures Act.
