Diaspora members are being encouraged to sign up for government business missions as the Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce commences engagements in some non-traditional markets in July.

Since last year, the Ministry has spearheaded a series of export and investment business missions to the Caribbean, United States, Canada and London.

“This year, we’re doing a lot of non-traditional markets. So next month, we’re doing Latin America, Mexico, Colombia, Costa Rica and El Salvador, and at the end of August into early September, we will be doing Nigeria, Ghana, Rwanda and Sierra Leone,” Jamaica Promotions Corporation (JAMPRO) President, Shullette Cox, advised.

She was addressing a panel discussion on Monday (June 17) on the topic ‘Jamaica Open for Business: Transforming Investment and Enterprise in Jamaica through Diaspora Engagement’, during the 10th Biennial Jamaica Diaspora Conference at the Montego Bay Convention Centre in St. James.

Ms. Cox explained that the objective of the business missions is two-fold.

“We’re not just going there talking about Jamaica and what a wonderful place we are to invest. We are also bringing with us, business people from Jamaica whom we will put in contact with business people in those countries with a view to exporting to [those territories] or developing business partnerships,” she stated.

This year’s Diaspora Conference was held from June 16 to 19 under the theme ‘United for Jamaica’s Transformation: Fostering Peace, Productivity and Youth Empowerment’.
