On Monday, October 14, Jamaica joined the rest of the world in commemorating World Standards Day 2019 under the theme ‘Video Standards Create a Global Stage’.
Each year on 14 October, members of the International Electrotechnical Commission, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Telecommunication Union celebrate World Standards Day, paying tribute to the collaborative efforts of the thousands of experts worldwide who develop the voluntary technical agreements that are published as international standards and, to raise awareness among regulators, industries and consumers as to the importance of standardization to the global economy.
Here in Jamaica, in recognition of the day, Technological Solutions Limited (TSL), a private sector organization that provides solution-oriented technical assistance to various players in small and medium-sized enterprises private sector and support institutions, hosted a reception at the Courtleigh Hotel and Suites in New Kingston.
Speaking at the reception, Minister of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries, Hon. Audley Shaw, lauded the work of TSL over its 23 years of operation in providing a comprehensive range of technical services to support the productive sector in Jamaica and the Caribbean.
“It gives me great pleasure to congratulate Dr. Andre Gordon and his team at Technological Solutions Ltd., on behalf of the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries and, by extension, the Government of Jamaica, for the tremendous work that you have been doing in transforming organizations and companies to deal with the practical realities of competing and exporting in a globalized business environment,” the Minister said.
The Minister noted that the global economy is standards driven and that Jamaica’s ascension into the global marketplace must be driven by standards and adherence to best practices, embracing and applying global standards to its products and service.
“Quality and standards must be the centre of every transaction, local and global. Quality and standards must be the norm,” he added.
For her part, President of JAMPRO, Diane Edwards, also lauded the work of Technological Solutions Limited.
“We welcome the role that TSL has been playing in creating a real opportunity for Jamaican products to attain market access in a most demanding market around the world. TSL is really synonymous with standards. You are a pioneer in making standards matter because that is what keeps us safe,” Ms Edwards said.
Meanwhile, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, TSL, Dr. Andre Gordon said that “TSL is committed to making standards live for us in driving the productive sector in the Caribbean forward, being competitive in our own markets and, in the global markets in which we intend to participate”.
He informed that TSL is now in an expansion mode and that early next year the company will avail itself of the opportunity to access the Junior Stock Exchange.
The Ministry, through the Bureau of Standards Jamaica, will also, on Thursday, October 17, commemorate the day with the hosting of an appreciation function for members of its technical committees who, as volunteers, continue to make significant contribution to the standards development process in Jamaica.
