MIIC, JAMPRO promote ease-of-doing-business initiatives

The wide range of reforms implemented to improve the process of doing business in Jamaica were the focal points of the Jamaica Business Reform Forum held on Wednesday, March 13, at the AC Marriott Hotel.

The event, staged by the Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce (MIIC), saw dozens of public-and-private-sector players in attendance, discussing the rationale behind, and the impact of, business
improvements as part of Jamaica’s Business Environment Reform Agenda (BERA).

JAMPRO and the Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ), with funding from the Foundations for Competitiveness and Growth Project, also collaborated closely with MIIC in the execution of the event.

“The Jamaica Business Reform Forum served as a channel to showcase several business reform initiatives, which have been underway for several years,” said President of JAMPRO Shullette Cox, who delivered the welcome at the event.

“While this work to enhance Jamaica’s business environment is ongoing, the forum allowed both Government and private sector members to share the same space and openly discuss these reforms,
as we safeguard the impact of their implementation.”

Easier, faster, simpler, better

Senator Aubyn Hill, minister of industry, investment, and commerce, who also serves as the chairman of the National Competitiveness Council (NCC), responsible for overseeing the implementation of the BERA, provided the keynote address at the Jamaica Business Reform Forum.

In his address, he stated: “We must continue to create a business environment and business processes that create ease in doing business in Jamaica – easier, faster, simpler and better.” Hill further emphasised that “to produce at an efficient level and compete at an international level, we must increase our productivity.

Much increased productivity is the single most important factor, which will drive growth in the country and aid in increasing economic expansion, profitability, exports, and foreign exchange earnings.”

The forum included two panel discussions involving representatives from both the public and private sectors. The initial panel focused on Jamaica’s advancements and provided insights into future strategies. The subsequent panel delved into strategies for leveraging business reforms by both governmental bodies and private enterprises to enhance efficiency and productivity.

The Jamaica Business Reform Forum was held to increase the public’s understanding of business reforms implemented by the Government, highlight public-private partnerships aimed at enhancing the business environment and illustrate the impact of Government investments on these initiatives.
