St. Elizabeth farmers quadruple cultivation of Irish potatoes

In response to Government’s target of achieving self-sufficiency in table Irish potato in 2017, farmers in St. Elizabeth have increased their cultivation of the staple with some 60 hectares planted in the December 2016 to January 2017 period. Growth in Agriculture Contributes to Lower Import Bill

Growth of 17 per cent in the agricultural sector in 2016 resulted in a reduction of US$6 million in the country’s food-import bill up to October, says Principal Director in the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries, Shaun Baugh. Students Welcome Renewed Thrust in Agriculture

A number of students and officials are hailing the renewed thrust of agriculture in schools, with the relaunch of the National School Garden Programme in November. The Programme seeks to demonstrate the importance of agriculture to students, while boosting the provision of breakfast in educational institutions across the island. Government Signs Contracts for Rehabilitation of 60km of Cane Roads

Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries Minister, Hon. Karl Samuda has signed two contracts for the rehabilitation of approximately 60 kilometres of roadway between the Long Pond Estate in Trelawny and the Appleton Factory in St. Elizabeth under the Sugar Transformation Programme.
